# Document Converter

> Convert a Word or PowerPoint document to PDF.

**Document Converter** turns a Word (`.docx`, `.doc`) or PowerPoint (`.pptx`, `.ppt`) document into a PDF and saves it as a task file. Use it when a document must be read or cited page by page: the `cite` tool and the PDF viewer work on PDFs. Display name **"Document Converter"**. **Off by default**; enable it per agent.

## Authentication and enablement

* No integration to connect. The platform converts through ConvertAPI; a platform without its key reports the tool as not configured.
* **Off by default.**

## Inputs

* `file_url` (required): the document, as a task file URL or a workspace path.
* `output_format` (optional): `pdf`, the only format.
* `output_filename` (optional): the PDF's name. Default: the document's name with `.pdf`.

The file's real type is read from its contents, never its name: a Word file saved under an old 8.3 name such as `VF_ACN~2.DOC` converts correctly.

## Output

The PDF as a task file (`file_url`, `file_id`, `filename`). In a task that runs in its own machine, the PDF is also saved into the workspace under `/workspace/outputs/doc_converter/`.

## Limits and side effects

* The document is sent to ConvertAPI for conversion.
* Up to 500 MB.

## Errors

* The file is already a PDF, or is not a Word or PowerPoint file.
* The conversion failed, or the platform has no converter key.
