# Web Search

> Searches the live web via OpenAI's hosted web search and returns a synthesized answer plus sources.

Searches the live web via OpenAI's hosted web search and returns a synthesized answer plus sources. Display name **"Web Search"**. On by default for new agents.

Do **not** use this for Nanonets platform semantics (tool contracts, config fields, harness behavior). Those live in `describe_tool` and `nanonets://tools/{name}` docs.

## Authentication and enablement

Platform OpenAI / LLM-proxy credentials. No user OAuth. Default-on.

## Inputs

* `query` (required): specific search string.

## Output

`{query, answer, sources[{title, uri, snippet}], model, tokens_used}`.

## Limits and side effects

* Outbound call to OpenAI (audited). Results can be stale or wrong; cite `sources`.
* Not a substitute for `describe_tool`.

## Expected errors

* Empty `query`.
* Provider failure / timeout.
