Resolves a public Slack channel name to its ID via fuzzy matching. Off by default. Use this before slack_send_bot_message when you have a human name (engineering, #general) instead of a channel ID.

Authentication and enablement

Requires a workspace Slack integration (mcp:slack). The bot token is injected. Enable the tool and bind Slack. Only public, non-archived channels are searched.

Inputs

  • channel_name (required): exact, partial, or misspelled name. A leading # and spaces are stripped.

Output

The single best match plus a few close alternatives.

Limits and side effects

  • Read-only. Does not join or create channels.
  • Private channels are not searched.

Expected errors

  • Missing Slack token.
  • Empty channel_name.
  • No public-channel match.
